Live or whole?

Postby cainenine » April 1st, 2012, 2:02 am

Anyone here choose to feed their dogs live animals, such as chickens or rabbits? I'm sure there are those who have dogs that do this on their own but I was wondering if anyone actually choose to feed this way? If not how many if any people feed their dogs whole animals like with everthing intact i.e. chickens with feathers still intact, rabbits with fur.

Lastly any other interesting items you may have tried, I have wanted to try out an entire cows head for my dogs but haven't gotten up the nerve to drop one in my yard yet.

Yes, we all know Damien lives on a partially "live" diet everytime one of my chickens makes a bad judgement call! Interestingly enough, his "prey sequence" is ALL about catching and stripping, and then he has no interest and leaves it up to the other dogs to eat it. I'm sure into today's world, allowing a carnivore to catch and kill and consume a prey item would be highly frowned upon by those "Nature Lovers" who don't understand how "Nature" works! I have fed many DEAD animals to my dogs, such as sheep or cows or deer, and it;s just a huge party for them. Which brings up an interesting point: I recently had an "expert" ask me how I could "dare" to assume I know what dogs need/like in their lives or not. I was rather taken aback as I felt this was pretty darn obvious to anyone who has ever given their dogs a wide range of natural experiences (which this person has not). Number one, on just about any dog's hit parade is Bloody Murder. At least it is for the average hound, sporting dog, terrier, northern breed or bulldog. And there was a guy in the UK that used a pair of English toy spaniels for dirt work and they loved it! So, I can tell anyone who asks that at least for "my" dogs (over the past 40 some years) it is a HUGE thing to get to eat "Natural". And yes, they DO play with the head, Evan! Just last week I peeked out the window to see Damien slinging a deer head around in an extecasy of fun. IT would go flying and he would go get it and do it again, all bouncing and jumping like a pup.

I haven't intentionally fed live or killed whole food, but when we lived in E.WA, my heelers were not fenced in and often caught their own food. They would scavenge off my neighbor's dead cow pile as well as hunting for mice and other rodents. There were times they had filled up so much out and about that they didn't eat their kibble at home. The laughable side of this was that they were excellent hunters and would work together to corner something or to push it up out of a burrow. When we added our pit to the group they seemed to consider her the idiot step child; they would be quietly sneaking up on something and then she would come plowing into the midst and they would lose their quarry. It was always funny to watch them try to sneak away when the pit would fall asleep. I don't really feed much other than the occasional bone from a friend that raises cattle, I think the neighbors would frown upon that in the midst of Tacoma!

I tried a half a pig's head (twice, actually !) and Ruby just nommed on the rubber ears a coupla times and then looked at me blankly.... So, twice, I had to cut the darned thing up. DH who is usually better than me with gross things, actually evacuated the kitchen in disgust! As I cut it up and moved the jawbone, the freakin' eyeball would move around - THAT WAS GROSS! I also have been unwilling to chuck out a whole chicken only to re-present the balance the next day since Ruby is only 44 lbs and I only feed approx 8 oz at a time for her dinner. It just seems so gross to me to let her slime on it and get grass on it and then stick it back in the fridge.... Tho I must say the pix I've seen of whole calf or goat heads look kinda neat and defo like a good 'puzzle' for the dog. I do feed whole mackerel when I can find it. If I ever ordered rabbit, tho, I'd consider it with the fur....maybe. I've been too cheap to order meat ... exp for just the one dog in residence.

I don't think I could feed live, but whole might be an other issue. Monte thinks he is "Champion Rat Killer" and does his best to hunt in our yard. He did catch and kill one while on leash with my Mom, which shocked the hell out of her. She claims he did one of these maneuvers into the ivy plants:

However, I don't like to encourage him because he does wander off in search of prey and was in a scuffle with a raccoon that resulted in some significant scratches and scarring. This has left a life long hatred for raccoons and he once jumped out of my car to go after a raccoon that was running towards my car (WTF, people! Don't feed the racoons!!!)

I fed whole rabbits before. The dogs enjoyed them, ate every bit including the fur. Even though they were from a trusted supplier, I made sure to deep freeze them for awhile before feeding, seeing as the bunnies came guts and all.
