And you wonder why we are all so sick when we don't give our body time to heal??? You MUST make the time, or you'll spend the last 10 years of your life in diapers... I'm not kidding.

I'm not saying that I'm one of them but can't there be some folks who actually don't need 8 hours or for that matter some folks who need more?

Doesn't the need for sleep vary person to person? My mom can't sleep longer then 6 hours straight. And she's fine when she wakes up. Feels rested and everything. now me on the other hand I need a good 9 to 10 hours of sleep or I don't feel rested at all and am ready to pass out in an hour or 2.

You need +7 hours of sleep, back to back, beginning around 10pm ( :o ) in order to provide enough time for the brain and body to repair itself. It is one of the most important things we can do for our long-term health (mental and physical). People stating they can live on 4-5 hours a night are kidding themselves. This is one of the reasons men decline so rapidly after having prostate problems. Since they have to get up repeatedly during the night to urinate, their sleep is interrupted leading to more rapid neurological and physical decline.

Technology is not helping our circadian rhythm, at all. I see it every day in my students who seemingly grow more and more obese in front of my eyes while taking adderal to pull "all nighters" and using caffeine and sugar to fuel their lives. This "under 30" generation is forecasted to die younger than their parents, for the first time in our Nation's history. Scary times!

Sidekick, you may have other issues. Can you sleep until 11am, every day if you could?

I definitely notice I eat more when I don't get enough sleep.

Glad to hear that you aren't sleeping in on the weekends. That's a sign of big problems to come due to long term nutritional deficiencies. However your split shift isn't ideal, so I'd reconsider it, unless it is child / school related. If you are watching TV, the blue light contributes to keeping you awake and late night carb cravings. Since installing F.lux on my computer, I can't believe how much faster I fall asleep.
