WHAT DO YOU FEED AND HOW DO YOU LIKE IT?

Postby BoldogKennel » March 28th, 2012, 11:24 pm

Please let us know what you feed and how you like it. This is always a topic of interest when dog people meet! :D

As for Casa Boldog, I feed Costco Kirkland brand Dry, runs about $26.00 a bag (cripes, I can remember when it was $14!) and it has served me well here for well over a decade. It is the same food as "Diamond" Performance dog food. I feed either chicken or lamb, I mix it around, but prefer the chicken as it is in smaller chunks and goes into the dog's food-toys better.

To this I add each night: one egg (because I have chickens and way too m any eggs, and an egg yolk is awesome food for a dog), and either a bit of bacon grease (kept in a jar on the stove) or veggie oil, or a spoonful of Adam's Peanut butter. This adds not only flavor, but important oils for the dog's coats. To this I add warm water, about 2 cups worth. This adds volume, makes sure the dogs are getting water when we travel and makes ME feel better! : ) I've heard people argue against this saying the hard dog food will soften and not keep the teeth clean, but considering my dogs have half the food down before I get the pan on the floor, that is not a concern.

In season I feed raw deer. Out of season when my friend's herding breed dogs kill yet another deer on their acreage... Amazing it, isn't it, when we all know ONLY pit bulls kill things! As well I feed a LOT of raw bones. I will say my dogs have the cleanest teeth of anybodies dogs I know and I contribute it to the bones.

For those of you who feed raw, would love to know exactly what your receipe is!

I used to be quite the (dog) foodie snob. Can't say I am anymore.

I fed prey-model raw for the longest time. At least till the price of meat went up and my local supplier died (store owner passed away). So back to kibble. Right now everyone eats 4Health, a Diamond food product. The old ladies are on the Senior formula. and Bud and Tate are on the performance formula. A 35lb bag runs about $34.99 at Tractor Supply. The results have been good. They get fish oil supplements and the old girls get joint supplements.

Do you cook the egg first or feed it raw? Our urban chickens are laying at a very good rate and I am sure our dog would love some yum in her food. We also feed Kirkland dry, the chicken flavor as she snubbed the lamb. She won't chew on anything when we aren't home, even raw bones sit on her bed until we come back and I am just not a fan of the smell in our house so she rarely gets them.

The Kirkland was recommended by my vet when we lived in E.WA as the pit we had then was showing some signs of food allergies and once we switched, her itchy ears and dry skin went away. We have stayed with it ever since.

What type of raw bones do you feed?

Do not cook the eggs, just mix them right into the food, or the dogs enjoy when I throw them some when I'm collecting! You know, since I've fed Kirkland I have NEVER had a dog with "allergies" or "skin issues" - so it must be an ok feed as its fed quite a few dogs over the years.

I feed a variety of raw bones: I feed raw deer/elk in season when hunter friends drop them off along with the skin, etc. I feed knuckle bones from the butcher shop. The dogs eat any raw chickens that get culled.

I feed nutra nuggets I think its called, its cheap which is truthfully why I like it and my dogs seem to do well on they do get a lot of human food as I just can't say no to those faces.

I woud love to feed raw but too expensive and don't have the freezer for it I use to feed some high end foods but I don't know what it is but it always gave my dogs mean gas

I feed my dogs Blue Buffalo's Chicken and Brown Rice. The price is kind of a higher end ($55.00/30lb.), but both of my dogs' skin and coat seem to stay healthy and don't get runs like some other dog food gives them often :D

my dogs mostly eat raw. we hunt so they get a lot of wild game and i also buy the raw chicken w/ bone from Mountain Dog Food. i'm always feed them fruit and veggies as treats or mixed in with their food. we'll be getting chickens this spring so they'll be getting eggs soon too! when we go away or on busy mornings/days (or if i'm feeling lazy  ) they get Acana grasslands. 2 of my dogs have some mild allergies and they seem to do best on this diet. my old diabetic gal just gets the acana, she has to be on a pretty strict diet. i heard raw is supposed to be good for diabetic dogs, but i'm worried about the high protein b/c we're pretty sure she's got some kidney issues too.
